Introduction

For each pastured poultry producer's mobile pens or chicken tractors, there is a slightly different adaptation or design. I have created a design which has its strengths in its simplicity, sturdiness, and utility.

The Design

The design of this tractor is so simple (yet effective) that truly anyone with a saw, hammer, and nails could build it quickly. Tape measure optional.

Shown here with ducklings in early spring, the11-piece pen works best with broiler chickens. Turkeys like to roam more, and it isn't really big enough for them, anyway.

This design is not dependent upon strict measurements, but having a master stick or board to mark off some cuts would save time.

The Isometric View

The suggested measurements for the Mulligan Creek Model. These are merely suggestions, however, and very adjustable to suit the wood cuts that you have available.

The measurements here describe a pen that can be home to up to 25 broilers. A half or two-thirds length of plywood may be used rather than the full 8-foot one shown here.

Conclusion

Likely the simplest and most inexpensive design available, the Mulligan Creek Model is great for those who want to raise a few birds for a hobby and great food. The larger designs would be more suitable for those interested in commercial production.
